Trial, SUP-ICU

– Compared the effects of stress ulcer prophylaxis with an acid suppressant (pantoprazole) versus placebo (saline) for critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).

Results

• We observed no difference in mortality after 90 days, infections or serious adverse events among participants treated with prophylactic acid suppressant (pantoprazole) or placebo (saline) in the ICU.

• Among participants treated with prophylactic acid suppressant (pantoprazole) around 3% developed bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract compared with around 4% of participants treated with placebo. 

These results have contributed significantly to our knowledge on the prophylactic use of ulcer medication for intensive care patients.

The results were published in the highly esteemed journal, New England Journal of Medicine (December 6, 2018).
